Southwark council picks Bermondsey Spa team

Southwark council has selected its development team for the regeneration of Bermondsey Spa.

Kennedy Haywards will be architect while its parent company, Erinaceous Group, will act as joint developer with Hyde Housing Association.

The designs (pictured) for the regeneration of the Old Jamaica Road and St James Church site comprise 400 homes and 100 live/work units, as well as shops and offices developed at street level around a 15-storey, 80-apartment tower.

The tower will incorporate a 10-storey-high, photovoltaic screen supplying solar energy to the building.

The move responds to London mayor Ken Livingstone’s draft environment strategy, which decreed that all major projects should improve the environment by including photovoltaic cells. The architect has gone a step further by promising that most of the homes will also have grass-covered roofs.

Erinaceous estimates that the development will cost £60m to build.
