The collapse of Godfrey Bradmans £1.5bn Elephant & Castle project has forced Southwark council to seek a development partner for the rundown Heygate Estate.
The estate was to have been redeveloped by Bradmans Southwark Land Regeneration (SLR)consortium as part of its overall plan.
However, the council announced two weeks ago that SLR’s proposals had been scrapped.
Southwark has decided to demolish and relocate the estate – a central part of the Elephant & Castle scheme – separately from any broader regeneration project.
The council planning officer for the area, Chris Horn, said that Southwark’s proposals would ensure that the original, cleared site of 27-acre (10.9ha) estate was free to be involved in the overall regeneration.
“The regeneration of the Elephant is a top priority for the council,” he said.
“We plan to go ahead with the relocation and improvement of the Heygate Estate as soon as we can – separately from the wider regeneration if necessary.”
Horn said that Southwark has “several candidates in the frame”, but no partner has been announced yet.
