Spending on rail consultants soars

The government’s love affair with consultants has blossomed in the railway sector where its spending on consultancy work has tripled to £39m over the past two years.

The figure compares with £13m between 1999 and 2001.

Much of the blame is attributed to the cost of pulling the plug on Railtrack although the Liberal Democrats contest this.
