A surge in online shopping helped to lift retail sales last month, fuelling hopes that the economy will recover in the second half of the year.
Sales volumes rose by 0.2 per cent, down from 1 per cent in June, according to the Office for National Statistics. Economists had forecast monthly sales would shrink by 0.2 per cent.
