Campaigners against Bromley council’s plans for a multiplex cinema at Crystal Palace Park have presented a redesigned national sports centre as their alternative.
The Crystal Palace Park Consortium, fronted by the main objector to the Bromley scheme, John Payne, claims that its design for a National Sports Centre would be better for sport, business and the environment.
The proposals are for a flexible all-weather sports facility, including an Olympic-standard swimming pool, athletics track and stadium. Much of the existing built areas would return to park-land under the plans.
Payne said: “These proposals offer a viable solution that will create jobs, regeneration and sporting and leisure opportunities.”
He said that he wanted to create “an inspirational model for the 21st century – restoring Crystal Palace Park as a showpiece for South-East London.”
