Sports Direct is poised to buy Brixton’s covered markets in south London for £30m.
In a surprise move, first revealed by the London Evening Standard newspaper, Britain’s biggest sportswear retailer, which is headed by the billionaire Mike Ashley, is understood to be the frontrunner to buy Brixton Village and Market Row.
The grade II listed arcades are home to 140 retailers and restaurants and are renowned for their range of foods.
Brixton Village and Market Row is owned by London & Associated Properties, which instructed agents GCW and Lewis & Partners.
No deal has been completed and it is thought that if one does go ahead, the purchase is likely to be made via a vehicle linked with the Sports Direct company rather than by Mr Ashley personally. It is not clear what Sports Directs strategy is for the site but it is thought to own land near by.
