Spurs wins stadium approval and revised section 106

Tottenham Hotspur Football Club has managed to secure planning permission for its stadium redevelopment, despite backtracking on its pledge to invest £16m into N17.

The club was last night given the go-ahead by Haringey council for its revised £400m White Hart Lane redevelopment plans, comprising a new stadium, 285 homes, together with retail, office and leisure space.

However, Spurs has also secured a landmark revision to a section 106 agreement, reducing its funding obligations from £16m to under £500,000 and removing the need to provide any affordable housing.

As reported by Estates Gazette last month, Paul Phillips, project director at Spurs, said the club was keen to avoid developing social housing on the site and believed that all 285 homes should be on the open market.

Instead, £27m from a City Hall and council funding pool has been allocated for North Tottenham/Northumberland Park, to support transport infrastructure and public realm improvements to help unlock Spurs’ proposals.

Spurs’ chairman, Daniel Levy, said: “We welcome the public sector coming together to further regeneration in an area with such a real need. We are proud of our roots in Tottenham and we are committed to seeking to deliver a world class new stadium, associated developments and the ensuing benefits of employment opportunities, economic uplift and community gains.”

The scheme will be delivered in three phases, with the first phase starting this autumn, and work on the stadium kicking off next summer.
