St Ives drives off ‘emmets’

Residents of St Ives, the popular Cornish coastal resort, have declared war on wealthy outsiders by proposing a ban on second homes.

The town, known as Kensington-on-Sea because of the high proportion of wealthy Londoners flocking there each summer, is using its neighbourhood development plan to block new holiday lets and second homes to stop locals being priced out of the market. One in every two new-builds would also have to be classed as affordable housing.

The average cost of a home in the town is now £315,000.
