St Modwen has gained consent for at £10m mixed-use development at a former glassworks site in Sunderland.
The initial application focuses on 17 acres bought by St Modwen in 2008/09, which included the former Pyrex and Corning glasswork sites.
St Modwen will now begin remediation and infrastructure work ahead of bringing forward the first phase of development in early 2011.
The scheme will provide 260 family dwellings and 16,000 sq ft of offices along with open spaces and formal landscaping.
It forms part of a wider Masterplan which has been worked up over the last 18 months in consultation with officers at Sunderland council, along with support from Sunderland Arc and which received unanimous support from local residents and interested parties who attended the public consultation.
St. Modwen’s regional director for Yorkshire & North East, Stephen Prosser, said: “We are extremely pleased to have gained planning consent in respect of this strategic development which is of such importance to Sunderland.
“Our aim is to move ahead to create a mixed use scheme of high quality which not only integrates into the existing neighbourhoods but adds real benefit to the wider area.”
