St Modwen has submitted plans to transform the former MG factory in Longbridge, Birmingham.
The 60-acre site, the birthplace of the Mini, will feature more than 100,000 sq ft of workspace, including creative studios, office buildings and co-working facilities, alongside 695 new homes. The plans, which will be set in over 10 acres of green spaces and link the wider Longbridge development to the town centre, will now be considered by Birmingham City Council.
St Modwen has so far delivered 1,450 homes and 1m sq ft of commercial space at Longbridge, after acquiring the wider, 468-acre site in 2003. On completion of the total regeneration it hopes to have delivered 2,800 homes and 2m sq ft of commercial space.
The developer said the iconic, heritage buildings would be restored as part of the plans. However, the proposals also include cutting-edge smart and sustainable technologies, in line with St Modwen’s ambition to be net zero by 2025.
St Modwen senior director Rob Flavell said: “Our plans represent more than just new buildings, but a thriving new community which will have its own distinctive character while bringing added benefits to the wider redevelopment of Longbridge town centre. These plans represent a vital and exciting part of our vision to regenerate Longbridge… while paying tribute to the historical importance and heritage of the site.”
