St Modwen and Persimmon Homes have been granted planning permission for their £50m redevelopment of the former Pyrex site in Sunderland, County Durham.
The development on the 17-acre site will comprise a total of 212 two-, three- and four-bedroom homes. Work is due to start imminently.
St Modwen acquired the site in two phases in 2008 and 2009. Ten acres of the site housed the Pyrex glass factory and the remaining 7 acres were used to accommodate Corning, a glass manufacturer.
Both factories have since been demolished in preparation for redevelopment.
This latest venture brings the total number of St Modwen/Persimmon sites in development to three.
In August 2010, the two groups began their partnership, which will see 2,000 homes built on St Modwen-owned sites across the UK during the next five years. They will have an end value of £300m.
Guy Gusterson, residential director at St Modwen, said: “This is a substantial development for the Sunderland area and we are delighted to have received consent for the detailed planning permission and can now move forward to the next stage. We are looking to start building work in October.”
