St Modwen has signed up Asda for its proposed redevelopment of Leegate shopping centre in Lewisham, SE12.
The supermarket chain has agreed a 20-year lease on the 68,000 sq ft anchor store. Proposals for the new Asda include a 320-space car park and a relandscaped public square as part of a comprehensive redevelopment of the 3.5-acre Leegate site.
The wider proposals include new private and affordable housing, potentially replacing local landmark Leegate House.
A public consultation is due to take place in early summer.
Killian Morris, senior development manager at St Modwen, said: “The retail landscape has changed radically since the Leegate centre was built in the 1960s and it’s clear a comprehensive redevelopment is required to secure its long-term future.
“Asda will increase the choice and value of food shopping locally which, complemented by an enhanced range of smaller shops, cafés and services, will cater to the community’s everyday needs.”
