Stadium Group/JJB bag North Shields Soccerdome consent

The Healey family’s Stadium Group and JJB Sports have been given the go-ahead for a £10m Soccerdome leisure scheme in North Shields, Tyne & Wear.

The scheme, which has gained planning consent from North Tyneside council, is the first of two football-led leisure schemes planned by the joint venture.

As previously agreed, following consent AWG Developments has sold a 10-acre (4.05ha) site at Royal Quays to Stadium for the scheme.

The JJB Soccerdome will total around 165,000 sq ft (15,328 sq m) and will include 11 indoor six-a-side football pitches, a health-and-fitness centre, a 19m swimming pool and shop as well as a licensed bar and sports cafe, coffee lounge and 500 car-parking spaces.

Stuart Seaton, AWG development manager, said: “This dedicated soccer facility next to Royal Quays will provide immense benefits for the local community and we are proud to have been instrumental in its future delivery.”

Stadium also has an agreement to develop a similarly sized Soccerdome on Haslingden Road in Blackburn, an edge-of-town site near the M65.

JJB developed the concept in the late 1990s with existing sites in Wigan and Derby.
