Stalemate in Safeway’s Northern Ireland expansion plans

Safeway’s bid to expand into Northern Ireland has stalled. The supermarket group is at loggerheads with Tony O’Reilly’s Fitzwilton group over a possible takeover of Fitzwilton’s 36 Wellworth supermarkets.

Safeway wants to acquire only a dozen of the 36 supermarkets on offer while Fitzwilton believes it would make no sense to dispose of its most prized assets while keeping the less revered ones.
