Starbucks to axe 30 stores

American coffee chain Starbucks is looking to dispose of 30 shops across the country.

Starbucks is understood to be relinquishing the leases of its non-profit making stores as part of a country-wide review of its property portfolio. The coffee chain has around 700 shops in the UK.

In January 2009, Starbucks announced plans to close 100 international stores as part of a programme to improve its business and ensure its long-term viability.

Starbucks’ has been hit by a fall sales. Its total net revenues – outside the US – for the 13 weeks ended March 29 fell 12% to £268.5m ($433.7m).

It has seen a 3% decline in comparable store sales due to a 2% decline in the number of transactions and a 1% fall in the average value per transaction. Its UK business reported negative comparable store sales for the quarter.

A Starbucks spokeswoman said: “We have been looking at all parts of the business to manage our cost structure and align the organisation in the most efficient way possible.

“Our priority during this time is to prepare for the continued uncertainty in the economy and ensure we have a strong foundation to support our long-term goals.”

“At the moment we are reviewing Starbucks UK portfolio of stores, and like many other retailers we are speaking with landlords.”
