Steve Smith joins Tunstall

Steve Smith has joined Tunstall Real Estate Asset Management as a senior advisor.

The former British Land chief investment officer and global head of asset management and transactions at AXA REIM will hold the role alongside a collection of other existing non-executive positions.

He is non-executive chairman of Starwood Real Estate Finance, the PRS REIT and AEW Long Lease REIT plc, and a director of Gatehouse Bank and the Pollen Estate, as well as being on the Network Rail Property supervisory board.

Smith was also due to chair M7 Real Estate’s UK REIT last year before the IPO was pulled and the seed portfolio internalised by M7.

Tunstall is an associate business of M7 Real Estate, although its ownership is separate but it can utilise infrastructure. It is a pan-European alternative investment fund platform established in 2016 and considers direct and indirect investment opportunities, including senior and mezzanine debt, public to private deals, convertible securities and equities.

In June last year, alongside Starwood Capital, it bought regeneration company Pinnacle Group from the Cheng family, which specialises in long-term local authority partnerships.

Roger Clarke, chief Executive of Tunstall and the former head of investment banking at Stifel, said: “The experience and connectivity that Steve brings to Tunstall will be invaluable. Steve continues to hold leading roles in some of the most interesting areas of the real estate capital markets today and I know that we and our clients will benefit greatly from his advice and insights.”

Smith said: “I have known Roger for a long time and have been hugely impressed with the progress he has made with Tunstall since its launch just over a year ago. He has assembled a strong team around him which has enabled him to source and execute some significant and high profile deals, raise capital as well as both launch and develop a number of highly innovative investment strategies across multiple asset classes and geographies.”
