Stockport council eyes headquarters move

Stockport council is considering consolidating into a 150,000 sq ft headquarters in the centre of the north west town.

At an executive meeting tonight, council planners will recommend Stockport launches a procurement process for a private sector developer for a three-building civic complex on a site next to the Town Hall.

The council currently occupies 242,000 sq ft of offices in a number of buildings across Stockport.

Around 2,000 staff would be moved into the new civic building, which could open by 2010.

The council said the development would be self financing, paid for by the disposal of existing council-owned buildings.
