Stockport redevelopment agreement moves forward

Developer Lend Lease and Stockport Council are close to signing an agreement which will kick-start a £500m redevelopment of Stockport town centre.

According to The Manchester Evening News a plan for the Bridgefield project, which will extend the town centre by creating 1m sq ft of retail space, will be agreed by the end of July.

The Bridgefield project is central to the council’s £500m regeneration vision for the town centre – ‘Future Stockport’, one of the UK’s largest renewal projects.

Lend Lease are assembling a team which will include architects Sir Terry Farrell and Peter Drummond, chief executive of the Building Design Partnership, whose Manchester office was responsible for preparing Future Stockport.

Lend Lease, the international retail and residential developer, last year increased its presence in north west England through the acquisition of Crosby Homes, and the redevelopment of Golden Square in Warrington.

Sandy Penfold, the council’s project director, said: “Lend Lease’s submission really caught our attention.

“Such a partnership will bring about a real step change for the borough in terms of our retail, leisure and residential offering and we look forward to working with Lend Lease on what will be Stockport’s biggest transformation yet.”

Cushman and Wakefield are advising Stockport Council.
