Stockport Town Centre East doubles up on its housing ambition

Stockport Mayoral Development Corporation has refreshed its ambitious regeneration plans, aiming to deliver 8,000 new homes over the next 15 years.

The £2bn masterplan represents a doubling of the initial target to deliver 4,000 homes on the 280-acre Town Centre East site.

Early this year, EG reported that the corporation was eyeing sites outside of the initial 130-acre masterplan, known as Town Centre West. In July, the council kicked off its search for a partner to draw up a strategic regeneration framework. CBRE has been appointed to run the process.

Stockport Mayoral Development Corporation, a joint venture between Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham, Stockport Council and Homes England, was established five years ago and since then has secured £600m in private investment, delivering 1,200 new homes, Stockport Interchange with its two-acre park, 170,000 sq ft of grade-A office space at Stockport Exchange, and transformed Weir Mill into a neighbourhood.

Mark Hunter, leader of Stockport Council, said: “We have shown what is possible when local government, communities and businesses join forces. With the MDC and CBRE working on the regeneration plans for Town Centre East, we are more confident than ever in our ability to deliver 8,000 new homes and create a Stockport that stands out as a leader in town centre living, benefiting everyone who lives, works or visits here.”

Eamon Boylan, interim chair of Stockport MDC, said: “The progress of Town Centre West since 2019 has demonstrated the value of Stockport MDC as a vehicle for delivering tangible and ambitious town centre regeneration. But the MDC’s success goes beyond buildings and spaces – it has created real opportunities for our local community and businesses.”
