Stoke council’s head of regeneration resigns

Tom Macartney, director of regeneration at Stoke-on-Trent City Council and managing director of the North Staffordshire Regeneration Partnership is to leave next month.

Stoke-on-Trent City Council has issued a statement confirming Macartney’s departure, but declined to confirm his future plans. A spokesman for the council said: “We are not prepared to comment on why he’s leaving or where he’s going to.”

Macartney, known for his direct management style, joined the council in May 2007 as lead officer for the NSRP, which coordinates regeneration plans across North Staffordshire. He is expected to leave at the end of September.

The statement confirmed that Hardial Bhogal, chief operating officer of the NSRP, will take temporary control of the local authority’s regeneration department.

In the statement, Macartney was quoted as saying: “The future of Stoke-on-Trent is bright and I look forward to next year when work starts on the new bus station in the city centre.”

Mohammed Pervez, leader of the council, added: “I wish Tom well and thank him for his and his team’s hard work in helping to start to turn this city round with exciting and well-planned regeneration.”
