Stonehenge tunnel scheme review ordered

The government has announced that plans to build a 1.3 mile road tunnel under Stonehenge, in Wiltshire, will be re-examined.

The cost of the tunnel for the A303 is expected to be £470m, almost £200m more than the original estimate.

Stephen Ladyman, roads minister, said that given the scale of the cost increase, the government had to re-look at whether the scheme still represented value for money and whether it remained the best option.
