Stop Stansted Expansion campaign applies for judicial review

The Stop Stansted Expansion group has filed an application for a judicial review with the High Court to halt the airport’s expansion.

It is arguing that the current plans for the airport need to be decided as a “nationally significant infrastructure project” by the secretary of state.

At the moment the application for expansion at Stansted submitted by Manchester Airports Group in 2017 will be determined by Uttlesford District Council.

If approved, the group says it would mean a 44 % increase in flights and a 66 % increase in passengers compared with 2017 levels.

SSE said the current airport expansion plans meet the legal definition of a nationally significant infrastructure project and so the planning application should be determined nationally by an expert team in the Planning Inspectorate on behalf of the secretary of state, rather than locally by UDC.
