Strategic Hotel Capital is said to have submitted an indicative bid of about £2bn for Granada Compasss Méridien chain.
Next week sees the deadline for initial offers.
SHC is particularly interested in the leased estate which includes Londons Grosvenor House and Waldorf hotels. The company is likely to be up against Hilton Group, Bass and Starwood Hotels as well as Nomuras Principal Finance arm.
