Strengthened London body moves within mayor’s shadow

The Association of London Government is moving its administrative head office across London to be close to the new Greater London Assembly.

The ALG is merging with four other London bodies to form a London-wide organisation and wanted to have its amalgamated operation under one roof, close to the GLA and the Mayor’s office.

The Corporation of London, which has a close relationship with the ALG, is rumoured to have paid £4.5m for the freehold of the 59.5 Southwark Street, SE1. It will lease the 2,787 sq m (30,000 sq ft) building to the ALG, which will move from Old Queen Street, SW1.

The ALG is merging with the London Housing Unit, the Transport Committee for London, the Greater London Employers Association and London Boroughs Grants.

The new association will retain its name and current boss Martin Pilgrim has been appointed chief executive. A constitution has been agreed and sent to the London boroughs for approval.

Pilgrim said: “It’s going to be an exciting but tough time in London. This newly created organisation will be a more powerful voice for London local government, building on the achievements of all the bodies going into the merger.”
