Student conversion for fire station

Student accommodation developer and construction firm Watkins Jones has submitted plans to transform Birmingham’s former Central Fire Station into a 30-storey tower block.

The developer plans to convert the Grade II-listed station and West Midlands Fire Service headquarters at Lancaster Circus into a £30m mixed-use scheme providing new student accommodation, shops, leisure and business space.

The scheme has been designed by fledgling Birmingham architect K4 and comprises 826 student rooms.

Subject to consent, work is scheduled to start on site later this year with completion due in 2013.
