Student scheme “undermines” Deansgate family homes plan

Plans to build a 28-storey, 534-bed student housing scheme at Deansgate South in Manchester have been thrown out by council planners.

Fusion Manchester DevCo sought to build the tower on a vacant plot of land at the junction of Chester Road/Bridgewater Viaduct and Deansgate, but will now have to go back to the drawing board.

Councillors argued that the scheme was not close enough to Manchester’s university campuses, and that the application did not demonstrate that there was an unmet need for student beds in the area. They also argued that the proposed development did “not demonstrate a positive regeneration impact in its own right” and would “undermine the objective to create a high-quality residential area that has a focus on families”.

The height, scale and massing of the project was also called into question.
