London, Oxford and Cambridge are the most expensive places for student accommodation, according to research released today.
Students in the capital are paying an average of £101.83 per week, 75% above the average of £56.30, and substantially above the two Oxbridge universities where around £80 is typical.
The south-eastern university towns, together with Edinburgh and Glasgow, occupy the remainder of the top half of the table, while students at the redbrick universities of Leeds, Birmingham, Manchester and Nottingham can expect to pay average or below average rents.
The cheapest student digs can be found in Middlesbrough and Stoke-on-Trent, at £38 and £39 respectively.
Simon Thompson, co-founder and director of Accommodation for Students, which produced the research, said: “Now that students are accumulating large borrowings to subsidise their study the cost of accommodation has become a critical factor in their choice of university.”
“Our UK-wide table is a valuable tool for both new and existing students in assessing their accommodation options.”
