Suburbs hit by funding shortfall

Britain’s suburbs are being neglected and starved of up to £1bn annually every year in favour of the inner cities.

The charge is made by some of the biggest suburban councils who are meeting today and are planning to take action to redress the balance. They claim that the infrastructure is facing increasing pressure but without any extra help from the government.

A two-day city suburbs summit takes place today (Thursday).

It will be attended by the leaders of Barnet, Kingston upon Thames, Trafford, Solihull, Barnsley and Stockport. Next week, Barnet council will be outlining plans for a bond which would be used to pay for £700m worth of roads, schools and hospitals.
