Retail spending has started to slow as people return from holidays at home.
Household spending increased by 15.4% in the year to August, according to information collected by Barclaycard, with a rise in all sectors except, unsurprisingly, international travel.
Demand for non-essential items increased by 15.9%, against 10.4% in July and the highest increase since before the first national lockdown.
However, separate figures from the British Retail Consortium show that the spending boom has begun to slow, with sales rising by 3% in August, compared with the 6.9% three-month average and 3.9% growth during the same month last year.
