Sunderland City Council has revealed plans to build more than 1,000 homes either side of the city’s Northern Spire Bridge.
The council has taken control over the site from the former landowner, O&H Q7, whose “vision for housing on the site stalled”, the local authority claimed.
Council leader Graeme Miller added: “If there is a sense that the private sector cannot drive the transformation we want to see across the city – and with the pace and vigour we would like – we will do what is needed to stimulate regeneration and drive forward on the front foot.”
Works to prepare the ground for the development will begin over the next 12-18 months.
The scheme is part of the council’s wider masterplan to build more than 7,000 homes across Sunderland in the next decade.
