Surf’s up as Scotland’s Wavegarden gets funding

Scotland’s first artificial surf park is set to open in summer 2024 after receiving more than £50m in backing.

The Wavegarden Scotland project will create an artificial surfing lagoon at the disused Craigpark Quarry, near Ratho, west of Edinburgh, creating about 100 permanent jobs.

The 23-hectare site, which is near the Edinburgh International Climbing Arena, will also host holiday accommodation and a food court.

The Scottish National Investment Bank is putting £26m into the venture, and OakNorth Bank is providing a £25.2m loan. BAE Systems Pension Fund intends to buy the park and lease it back to Tartan Leisure once construction is finished. Other backers include Murray Capital and Promethean Investments.

The surf park first received planning consent in 2018.
