Surgical college gets new hub in Birmingham

The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh is to relocate its Birmingham office from Colmore Row to the Walker Building in Digbeth.

The deal was signed for units A1 and A3, which total 3,913 sq ft. Asking rents in the building are understood to be £16 per sq ft.

The building totals 19,912 sq ft and is owned by Hartwell. It spans two interconnected Grade II listed former factory buildings which were constructed in 1911 for nautical instrument inventor Thomas Walker & Son.

The surgical college will join current Walker Building tenants Clearcut, Spungold and the Federation of Groundwork Trusts.

Joanne Churchill, group property manager at Hartwell, said: “We have invested to refurbish the Walker Building to bring it into the 21st century to work for those companies seeking the exciting vibrancy and connected location that is Digbeth while needing efficient workspace in a central location.”

Andy Riach, director of office leasing at Lambert Smith Hampton, which advised Hartwell, added: “Currently, there is a high demand for office space in Digbeth but a lack of office supply as many schemes are converted to alternative uses. This trend reflects the creative atmosphere and connectivity that Digbeth offers, making it an attractive location for companies seeking to retain and attract top talent.”

JLL acted on behalf of the college.
