Swindon may seem an unlikely cultural destination, but a multi-million campaign could, if successful, see the town’s major collection of 20th century UK art given a new home that would rival those in London.
If the scheme goes ahead, the art collection would move from its current location in the Old Town – which only has space to show about a fifth of the works – to a £17.5m museum and art gallery that will form part of a cultural complex in Swindon’s town centre.
The Heritage Lottery Fund turned down a bid for £12.5m in funding, but a new application will be made, and the council will add £5m. The complex will also include bars, restaurants and a theatre.
