An 18-acre (7.28ha) former railway yard site in West Country town Norton Radstock is being earmarked for a multimillion-pound, mixed-use development.
The Norton Radstock Regeneration Company (NRGC) has clinched £500,000 worth of South West Regional Development Agency funding to prepare a masterplan for the site.
A team of specialists in transport, urban design, ecology, sustainability and planning would be appointed in the next few weeks, a NRGC spokesman said.
Ian Thompson, SWRDA head of operations, said: “The money will help to bring forward the long-awaited town centre, bringing derelict land back into reuse and producing a high-quality environment for people to live, work and play.”
