Tarmac Construction has lodged an outline planning application for up to 23,225 sq m (250,000 sq ft) of offices and a hotel on Schooner Way at Atlantic Wharf, Cardiff Bay.
If the proposals get the go-ahead, a number of key sites in the city centre could be opened up for office or hotel redevelopment on Wood Street near Cardiff Central train station.
Cardiff County Council is considering relocating staff from its planning department to the 3.23 ha (8 acre) Schooner Way site. Following that, the council is believed to be looking to move its Environmental Protection and Planning departments. At the moment the divisions are in two 1960s office blocks on Wood Street.
Tarmac’s planned hotel/office development is on the last undeveloped plot in the area. It could be ready in time for the EuroSummit next year and so double as a media centre for the event. Holiday Inn has been linked with the Schooner Way site, although other operators interested in Cardiff include Sir Rocco Forte who is building a hotel near the Techniquest science centre in the Bay.
The Wood Street sites will be boosted by the proposed Millennium stadium nearby, opening up key opportunities for hotel operators.
