Taylor Wimpey has bought the former Cadbury Somerdale chocolate factory in Keynsham, near Bristol, to redevelop into a residential and commercial scheme.
The housebuilder has bought the 220-acre site from US owner Kraft Foods in a deal thought to be worth around £30m. It was put up for sale last March through BNP Paribas Real Estate.
Subject to planning, the estate will be redeveloped into more than 600 homes and 250,000 sq ft of commercial space, including offices.
Verve Properties is in talks to become the commercial developer of the scheme.
