Taylor Wimpey signs Gove’s contract

Taylor Wimpey has confirmed that it has signed the government’s Self Remediation Contract.

The contract makes the principles of the fire safety pledge, which the company voluntarily signed in April 2022, legally binding.

The housing developer said: “It is our long-held view that leaseholders should not have to pay for the cost of remediation and our priority has always been to ensure that customers in Taylor Wimpey buildings have a solution to cladding remediation. We took early and proactive action, committing significant funding and resources to address fire safety and cladding issues on all Taylor Wimpey affected apartment buildings.”

It has set aside £245m for its remediation commitments, and said this “remains our best estimate of the cost of our commitments to remediate Taylor Wimpey buildings in compliance with current fire safety standards”.

The deadline to sign the contract was yesterday, 13 March. Unless housing developers sign, they risk being barred from developing land in England by the secretary of state for levelling up, housing and communities, Michael Gove.
