Terrace Hill Group has acquired a 7.1-acre site in Sedgefield, County Durham, to convert into a 50,000 sq ft supermarket.
The purchase is subject to planning permission and the signing of a prelet.
There is currently no major supermarket in Sedgefield. Terrace Hill planned to initiate a public consultation process at the end of June, with a view to submitting a planning application by the end of August.
Duncan McEwan, Terrace Hill’s head of retail, said: “The exchange of contracts on this site follows a detailed analysis of the town, where there is a serious underprovision of convenience retailing and, consequently, a strong interest from the retail operators.”
