Tesco has been given the go-ahead to progress with extensions on three stores in the South West.
The supermarket has been granted full planning consent to extend its store in Axminster town centre, Devon, to 32,000 sq ft and include a new car park and pedestrian bridge. It comes after Tesco agreed to the council’s request for section 106 funding of £60,000 towards a bus service for the town.
Tesco has also secured resolutions to grant planning consent subject to completing 106 agreements at Wadebridge in Cornwall and Taunton, Somerset.
Cornwall council’s strategic planning committee issued a resolution to grant planning consent to Tesco to expand its store in Wadebridge by 15,000 sq ft. The council refused plans by rivals Morrisons and Sainsbury’s to build out-of-town stores.
Taunton Deane borough council has approved Tesco’s planned expansion of its Castle Street store by 14,000 sq ft – approximately 50%. A mezzanine level will be added, in addition to 54 extra parking spaces.
Juliette Bishop, spokeswoman for Tesco, said: “The store extensions provide us with an opportunity to meet our customers’ demands for more choice and a better shopping experience at these locations. We believe that it is now the right time to bring a range of improvements to the stores that will help maintain and enhance the vitality and trade in each of the town centres.”
