Tesco gets nod for Lancashire cricket ground store

Supermarket giant Tesco has won planning consent for a 155,000 sq ft store next to Lancashire County Cricket Club’s Old Trafford stadium, which is being redeveloped by Ask Developments.

However, Trafford council planners have recommended the refusal of a proposal by developer Derwent Holdings to build a 90,000 sq ft Sainsbury’s supermarket at White City Retail Park, around one mile away.

The retail assessment supporting Tesco’s application stated that no other suitable, available or viable sites were available for a large foodstore in the area.

Tesco is paying Trafford council £21m for the site, and LCCC has argued that the supermarket development is crucial to the redevelopment of Old Trafford.
