Sandwell council has teamed up with food retail giant Tesco to draw up plans for the regeneration of West Bromwich town centre.
The council has announced plans for a retail/leisure scheme (pictured) at a 14.2ha (35-acre) site located between the town centre and the Black Country Expressway.
Around 18,580 sq m (200,000 sq ft) of retail will be built alongside a 12,820 sq m (138,000 sq ft) Tesco Extra store, nine-screen multiplex cinema, a health & fitness centre, 1,858 sq m (20,000 sq ft) of A3 cafes and bars, and a 2,000-space car park. The proposals will see the town’s existing ring road relocated to create an uninterrupted link between the development and the existing Queens Square shopping centre.
The council plans to undertake extensive public consultation on the proposals.
David Hall, senior development executive at Tesco, said: “We’ve confidence in West Bromwich but are aware that the town needs a new initiative and investment in order to flourish. Working in partnership with the council and those who work in the region, we are sure that this regenerative initiative will ensure the town centre and local communities will benefit.”
Hartnell Taylor Cook advised Tesco, while CB Hillier Parker represented the council.
