Tesco puts site on market following £4.9m acquisition of West Country stores

Tesco is putting a retail site at Lympsham in Somerset on the market for redevelopment following the purchase of a local supermarket chain.

Tesco beat Safeway to acquire two Somerset supermarkets, both potential development sites, for £4.9m.

As revealed by EGi last month, Tesco and Safeway were competing to buy two 2,322 sq m (25,000 sq ft) superstores in Lympsham and Burnham-on-Sea.

A Tesco spokesperson said the Lympsham store will close in November and the site will then be sold for redevelopment. The store in Burnham will undergo a refit and reopen next month under the Tesco name.

Tesco has now confirmed that it has bought Sanders Supermarkets Ltd which owns the freehold of the two stores.
