Tesco rail tunnel collapse report rejected by Network Rail

The future of a £20m Tesco development over a railway line in Buckinghamshire was more doubtful this week, six weeks after the tunnel being built by the supermarket giant collapsed.

Network Rail has rejected a report into the collapse of a 160ft section of tunnel at Gerrards Cross, over one of the main London to Birmingham lines because of ongoing safety concerns.

“We are not satisfied that the tunnel is safe,” said a spokesman. “We are getting quite frustrated with the delay.”

The confidential report, submitted on 1 August, will now be handed back to the retailer.

Tesco had been building the tunnel, which collapsed on 30 June, to allow a 20,000 sq ft store to be built over the line.

A decision on whether to continue with the development has now been pushed back after the report’s rejection.

The tunnel collapse is expected to double the scheme’s cost to £40m.
