Spenhill, the regeneration arm of supermarket giant Tesco, has agreed to prelet 350,000 sq ft of student accommodation to Northumbria University at its Trinity Square development in Gateshead.
Spenhill also plans to develop a 100,000 sq ft Tesco store at the site, in Gateshead town centre, plus 40 retail units, restaurants, a car park and public space.
The student accommodation will be designed by 3DReid and will open in 2014.
Northumbria University’s vice-chancellor and chief executive, Andrew Wathey, said: “Partnership working of this kind marks the contribution a university can make to the economic, cultural and social well-being of an area.”
