Spenhill, the development arm of supermarket Tesco, has been given the go-ahead for a £150m redevelopment of Gateshead town centre.
After teaming up with the local council earlier this year, Spenhill has won consent to turn the 1960s-built Trinity Square centre into a town square.
Designed by 3DReid, the 8.9-acre scheme will include 200,000 sq ft of shops, a 993-bed student village, and a Tesco Extra superstore.
