Tesco unveils £30m Rotherham waterside plans

Supermarket giant Tesco and local developer Evans of Leeds have unveiled plans for a £30m mixed-use waterside development in Rotherham, Yorkshire.

The retailer and the property firm have submitted outline plans to Rotherham council which include Tesco relocating its existing 5,000 sq m (54,000 sq ft) store at Forge Island in Rotherham’s city centre to a larger brownfield site on the banks of the river Don. The 896 sq m (85,000 sq ft) Tesco superstore (pictured) will be located on the former Guest & Chrimes factory site to the south-west of the centre. Proposals for the site also include retaining the frontage of the former Guest & Chrimes building, with space inside the building also used for offices and leisure.

Meanwhile, the Forge Island site will be redeveloped to include more offices, residential apartments, bars and restaurants. The project will regenerate a significant area of contaminated land. Tesco’s UK regeneration project manager, Martin Venning, said: “This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for Rotherham and we want to work with the council and local people to make it happen.”

The Guest & Chrimes site falls within the ‘New York Riverside’ area in which Rotherham Council is investing £43m. The 485ha (1,200-acre) regeneration zone runs south-west from Rotherham city centre to the M1 at junctions 33 to 35.
