High street giant Tesco has won consent to develop a major new retail quarter in West Bromwich town centre.
Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council has granted permission for the supermarket chain to build a 570,505 sq ft development on a 38 acre site which will create 2,000 new jobs.
Plans will see the creation of a new retail area within the town with canopied streets offering a Tesco Extra store, comparison shops, restaurant and a cinema. Plans also include well integrated routes and spaces between the new retail quarter and the town’s existing shopping district.
Tony Fletcher, corporate affairs manager for Tesco said the major investment would deliver a step change to the town’s retail offer:” This consent represents a major milestone towards the reinvigoration and regeneration of West Bromwich in a tough economic time.”
Demolition work is underway and the process of road improvement work will start shortly with the scheme being started later this year and on track for completion in autumn 2012.
Planning adviser for Tesco is Nathaniel Lichfield and Partners, while Savills is letting agent on the scheme.
