Tesco’s profits make mockery of £700m tax gift

The government is being urged to rethink its coronavirus support package after it emerged that Tesco would benefit from a £700m tax break despite increased profits.

Tesco has, along with other retailers, been granted a 12-month business rates holiday by chancellor Rishi Sunak. But unlike most retailers, supermarkets have continued to trade during the coronavirus lockdown and have seen sales rocket.

Figures from Nielsen estimate that supermarkets earned an additional £1.9bn from extra sales over the past four weeks.

Tesco is expected to post pre-tax profits today of £1.85bn for the year to February, up £300m from last year. Investors are urging the retailer to go ahead with a full-year dividend.
