Transport for London (TfL) has awarded a £363m contract for work on the East London line extension to a consortium of Balfour Beatty and Carillion.
The New Cross-Whitechapel line will be extended 2.25 miles north to Dalston Junction on the North London line and a new junction built at New Cross Gate which will enable trains to continue south to Crystal Palace and West Croydon.
The work should be finished by 2010, well in time for the 2012 London Olympics. TfL wants to eventually build a second spur off the East London line near Surrey Quays so trains can run on the East London line from Clapham Junction. This would ensure a complete orbital route around the capital.
