Planning permission has been granted for a £300m five-storey basement extension at the Ritz, W1, including a two-level spa and 20m swimming pool.
It is thought to be the biggest refurbishment in the hotel’s 115-year history, as its owner seeks to “improve and modernise” its offer.
The scheme, which was given the all-clear from Westminster councillors this week, will also add 53 new rooms, a gym and a beauty salon to the landmark hotel.
Designed by EPR Architects, the extension will be built on the site of the demolished Eagle Star House, a 1970s office block. The main building will also be extended at roof level to the Arlington Street Wing.
The Barclay family sold the hotel to Qatar-based tycoon Abdulhadi Mana Al-Hajri in March last year.
